Turning Around in the Neighborhood Across Jefferson

Are you still doing it?  Neighbors are seeing an increase once again in DaVinci drivers using driveways (and the middle of the road) to make U-turns after leaving the school.  We have made significant changes to the traffic pattern in the parking lot to accommodate drivers who don’t want to have to go south on Jefferson. Please take advantage of those opportunities instead of turning right out of the parking lot and then using the 136th Lane neighborhood to turn around in.   If you are questioning how to exit onto Bunker Lake Blvd after picking up or dropping off your child please reach out to one of the staff members working in the parking lot and they can assist you.  Thank you for helping us to be good neighbors.

Student Council

Thank you to everyone who made the book drive such a huge success! The total number of books donated were 2,206. Here are the final counts for donations:
1st Floor – 986 books
2nd floor – 1,027 books
3rd floor – 193 books
First and Second floor earned pajama and comfy day today!

2nd Grade Olympics

Second graders put on their virtual Olympics performance today! Students dressed up as Olympic Athletes. We hope you were able to tune in and watch their wonderful performance. Way to go second graders!

Knowledge Bowl

Congrats to the Eighth Grade Quiz Bowl team of Seno, Ruchira, Daniel and Saivya who brought home the championship trophy!  What an amazing day!  Shout out to all of the teachers who encouraged and built their knowledge along the way.
This also qualified the kids for the national middle school competition in Chicago!

Notes from Nurse Julie

Student Illnesses:
We are thankful to see a decline in COVID cases, but we are unfortunately seeing an increase in colds, stomach flu, and other illnesses.  Please continue to assess your child each day for symptoms and if they are feeling well enough to make it through the school day.  In addition, if your child has a fever, vomiting, or diarrhea, they will need to be free of these symptoms for at least 24 hours without the use of medications before returning to school.

Borrowed Clothing:
If your student has borrowed clothing from the nurse’s office, please wash what was borrowed and return so they are available for future use to other students in need.

Boys Pants Needed:
If you have gently used boy’s uniform pants in sizes 8, 10, or 12, please consider donating them to the nurse’s office.

Support Space

This week, March 6-12, 2022 is National School Social Work Week! Courtney Rowe is our school’s social worker! Read below for a brief explanation of her role, and why she is so important to our community.

School Social Work is a specialized area of practice within the broad field of the social work profession. School Social Workers bring unique knowledge and skills to the school system and the student services team. School Social Workers are trained mental health professionals who can assist with mental health concerns, behavioral concerns, positive behavioral support, academic, and classroom support, consultation with teachers, parents, and administrators as well as provide individual and group counseling/therapy. School Social Workers serve as a link between home, school and community to support the needs of all students and their families.

Check out this PDF to learn more about what School Social Workers do for our students and school communities. Ms. Rowe is happy to serve DaVinci Academy, and support our students and families.

Please reach out if you have questions or concerns. If your family is faced with new or ongoing needs and challenges throughout this time, please let us know by filling out this survey and someone from our team will reach out to further assist your family!

Helping Children Cope With Terrorism: Tips for Parents & Educators
Intentional acts of violence that hurt innocent people are frightening and upsetting. Children and youth will look to adults for information and guidance on how to react. Families and school personnel can help children cope first and foremost by establishing a sense of safety and security. As information becomes available, adults can continue to help children work through their emotions and, perhaps, even use the process as a learning experience. Here are some tips for how to help children feel safe and secure in the face of fears surrounding current events.

Every Meal

We are excited to share that we have partnered with Every Meal (formerly Sheridan Project) to provide meals for families in need at DaVinci. This program is free for all families at DaVinci in grades K-8, there is no income qualification, and there is no private information collected.

Families who sign up will receive a 3-5 pound bag of food each week for each school age child they sign up. Families will need to complete a separate form for each child they are enrolling. There are 5 different types of meal bags available for families to choose from. Families can sign all of their children up for the same type of bag or they can sign up for different bags, depending on preference. Meal bags will be placed in your student’s backpack on the last day of each week. Families can sign up or cancel at any time as their needs change.
