Charter School Politics

(Debra Lach)

In the weeks leading up to the mid-term election, I attended several sessions led by the Minnesota Association of Charter Schools (MACS) and the Center for School Change to discuss and develop proposals regarding the politics and policies that are critical for the ongoing support of charter schools in Minnesota and the success of our students moving forward.

Because of the discussions about “voucher” schools and misunderstandings about private, voucher, public and charter schools, it is important that we stay informed and help lead policy regarding public charter schools.  State laws regarding charter schools differ substantially, and our charter schools in Minnesota are often judged based on misinformation or data from other states.

The Minnesota Association of Charter Schools (MACS) has adopted the following 3 high level agenda items.  There are 66 bullet points regarding these three agenda items that MACS is currently reviewing with members.  We will share more as the agenda becomes finalized for the next legislative session.

AN AGENDA TO FULFILL THE PROMISE – PROPOSED

When Minnesota’s charter school law was enacted in 1991 the underlying promise was that chartered public schools would have the autonomy and ability to be innovative in exchange for being accountable for student success and good stewardship of resources.

Twenty-seven years later that promise is still a work in progress.

While charter schools have been held accountable for student success and good stewardship of resources, public policies have not provided the autonomy, nor resources for charter schools to fulfill the innovative purposes outlined in the charter school law.

One measure of accountability is that 25% of chartered schools have closed, or never opened because they did not demonstrate results or fulfill their original promise.  One measure of public policy not fulfilling its promise is the growing disparity in funding for charter school students.

Twenty-seven years later that promise is still a work in progress.

Today, there are three significant areas of public policy which need to be addressed to provide the latitude promised to charter schools.

1] Equitable Funding for Charter School Students

2] A Rationale Policy Approach for Charter School Facilities

3] The Latitude for Innovation – Accountability vs Autonomy

As MACS and charter school boards and directors work on these policies, we will continue to share information with you.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Thank You,
Debra Lach

Effective Communication

We have identified a need for an assessment of our communications systems and would like parent feedback on areas for improvement.   If you would like to be a part of the ad hoc committee to investigate ways to streamline school wide communications please contact Holly Fischer.

Character Ed focus

The Character Ed focus for the month of November is Self-Management. We define self-management as the ability to successfully regulate one’s emotions, thoughts, and behaviors in different situations—effectively managing stress, controlling impulses, and motivating oneself. In our classrooms, we will remind students to get themselves ready for success. That looks like sitting by someone that will allow them to be successful, thinking about others before speaking or an action, and making sure they have control of their bodies. Self-management does look different at various grade levels. For instance, a middle school student should have better control of their emotions than most primary age students. However, that isn’t always the case, so it is our privilege to work with families in helping our DaVinci students grow into young adults ready to be a productive member of society.

Closings/ Weather Or Emergency

Emergency school closings due to severe weather, or any other reason, are posted on the school’s website, major news station websites and emergency postings, and announced via School Messenger texts and/or phone calls.  The decision to close school will usually be made before 6:00 a.m. on the day in question. PLEASE NOTE that our schedule is SEPARATE from Anoka-Hennepin ISD or any other school district.

Hand Warmers Requested

Please help out our recess staff and car line teachers by donating some hand warmers to put in their gloves.  Donations can be dropped off in the office.

Bonuses on Give to the Max Day: Each hour on November 15, one Golden Ticket of $1,000 will be awarded through a random drawing of all donations transacted during the previous hour.  Be sure to visit our page and donate that day.

Heggies Pizza Sale

Order forms for Heggies Pizza were sent home with your student(s) yesterday.  Order forms are due back Monday, November 26.

This year’s pizza sale funds will be used for art and music upgrades; such as new risers for the music department and new art supplies and tools for the art department.

Uniform Refresher DaVinci Academy students

Please double check the uniform policy  and make sure you are sending your student to school in clothing that meets the requirements.

  • Students are allowed black or tan pants, but they need to be a chino/dress pant style. Yoga pants, jeans, leggings and sweatpants are not allowed.
  • Also, while black or tan jumpers are allowed to be worn over a red polo shirt, please note that the red polo-style dresses are not permitted.  Each outfit must include a black or tan base/bottom.
  • Students are asked to tuck-in shirts and remove non-uniform sweatshirts. According to the policy, when a student appears at school out of uniform, they will be required to correct the violation. Parents may be contacted to bring alternative clothing immediately to school. Refusal to comply with this policy may result in a discipline referral. Please help your students comply with the uniform policy.

Lastly, as the winter weather sets in, please make sure your students have appropriate outdoor clothing. Remember to label everything, including hats, mittens, jackets and boots.

Applied Labels

Please remember to label your child’s belongings.  Applied labels are a great way to label belongings and 20% goes back to our school.

Please remind your child to check the lost and found for his/her belongings. The lost and found will be donated this Friday, November 16.

ONGOING

Music Performances and Informances

The DaVinci Academy Music Department is excited to share our 2018-2019 school year performance dates. This year, performances fall into two categories: evening concerts and daytime informances, both of which families are invited to watch. An informance gives students the opportunity to demonstrate the foundations of music by covering multiple state standards and showcases how music connects to other subjects. Along with evening concerts, informances will give students a well-rounded and meaningful learning experience.

High School Plans for 8th Graders

As we are nearing the end of the first trimester, a lot of parents of our eighth graders are starting to think about high school.  Very few school districts offer open enrollment, but for those that do, the deadline to submit applications is between December 1 and January 31.  This includes the application process for the CEMS program at Blaine High School.  If you are interested in continuing at a charter school, there are a few options but most involve some travel time.
If you would like to know more about specific programs or schools or just want to discuss what might be best for your child, please feel free to contact either Terry Moffatt or Melissa Derby.

2019-2020 Enrollment is Now Open

We are now accepting applications for the 2019-20 school year for students who would like to attend DaVinci Academy for grades Kindergarten through 8th grade. To complete an application for the next school year click here and click “Online Enrollment”. Sign up through our new online enrollment system to complete and submit the application.
All new students who are interested and not currently enrolled at DaVinci Academy, including siblings, must complete an application. Applications are due by January 31, 2019, to be included in the enrollment lottery for the 2019-2020 school year.
Our next Information Session for prospective families is Tuesday, January 8, at 6:00 p.m. Information Sessions are for those who may be interested in attending DaVinci Academy.
Please feel free to share this information with your family or friends.

Lunch Account Balances

Want to stay up to date on what your child is purchasing in the cafeteria?  Log onto SchoolPaymentPortal.com to create an account. There you can view all transactions and add money into your child’s lunch account.  Please check your child’s account weekly to ensure your child has a positive balance.

BRRR – Do You Have the Silent Dismissal App?

The teachers who assist your children at the end of the day in car line would be greatly assisted if everyone who picked children up would use the Silent Dismissal app.   We often have trouble with phones freezing as teachers are entering numbers on cold days and parents can easily dismiss their children from the warmth of the car using the app.  So, if you are able, please contact the office to get set up with the Silent Dismissal app.  Thank you!
