NEED TO KNOW

Spring Break-No School March 8-15!

The last day of Trimester 2 is Thursday, March 7, please remind your student(s) to check that all school work is turned in.  Report cards will be mailed out the week of spring break. You can also access your child’s grades online.  Parents will need to log in to the Infinite Campus parent portal > select a student > then “Grades” on the menu on the left side of the screen.

Cell Phone/Internet Safety

As parents and teachers, it is important for us to be aware of the culture around our children/students. Recently, there has been publicity around a viral story called the MOMO Challenge. Many reputable sites say the challenge is a hoax, nonetheless, our students at DaVinci Academy have been talking about it amongst themselves. These recent stories provide an opportunity for teachers and parents to remember the important task we have in teaching our children about internet safety. I encourage you, as parents, to be in constant communication with your child about using discernment and making good choices about what they are viewing online as well as being careful about both words and images they are posting to social media sites and messages to others.

There are many quality sites that teachers and parents can go to for more information about keeping our children safe online. I’ve included a few resources for families:

Family Online Safety Institute

Common Sense Media

Creating a Family Media Plan (American Academy of Pediatrics)

Talking with Kids about being online (Federal Trade Commission)

Parenting Teens in a Digital Age-Resource Sheet (Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation)

Please let me know if I can be of any assistance to you in this area.

Bus Stop Monitor-Volunteer Opportunity

Are you looking for a way to get your volunteer hours in?   Consider being a Bus Stop Monitor.
A Bus Stop Monitor:
  • Spot checks student bus tags to make sure children are in the right place
  • Ensures that students are picked up from their afternoon stop or are allowed to walk home from the stop
  • Waits with a student if a parent is late for afternoon pick up
  • Maintains a contact list of all of the families who use the stop
  • Communicates with the driver, Director of Operations and the front office when necessary.
This is a great way to create community among families and help ensure the safety of all students at each bus stop.  Consider volunteering for this important role and watch for an opportunity to sign up in the future.

PBIS Family Survey

The Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) Parent Involvement Committee is focused on building parent, family, and community involvement at DaVinci Academy, especially in our PBIS programming. We are committed to educating families and the community about what PBIS is, how it helps our students, and what our school is doing to support student development with PBIS. This year, to ensure that our work is meeting the needs of our community, we are reaching out to you for feedback and suggestions of how you would like to be involved in your child’s school community. Please take a few minutes to complete our survey here: https://goo.gl/forms/a1iktpzvZTdYa69B3. Please complete within 2 weeks
If you have any questions, please contact our committee chair, Allison Smith at asmith@davincicharterschool.org.  Thanks for your feedback!

Mr. Shield’s Corner

Mr. Shields

The DVA character trait for March is Justice. Justice is defined as using discernment, compassion, and integrity to make decisions and take actions based on what is considered the ultimate best course or outcome for all involved. In the age of social media, viral videos, and “fake news”, the need for discernment is more important than ever. Let’s work together as parents and teachers to help our students grow in their ability to discern what is right and true so that they can make this world a better place.

Assume Every Day is Outdoor Recess…

…and dress your children accordingly.  Snowpants, boots, mittens and a hat are a must so please make sure your child has them so that they can play outside.

Intersession Sneak Peek

On April 1, you will be able to register on our website for Intersession classes, and there are some amazingly fun offerings this year!   If you are wondering what Intersession is, it is a 4 day week of classes that are fee based and optional for students who would like to participate instead of having days off school.  Intersession is scheduled for May 20th-23rd this year.
Here is a peak at one of the classes being offered for 5th-8th graders by Mr. Melander.

Are you longing for Spring? Check out this fun overnight camping experience for grades 3-5.  Yes, warmer weather will arrive…

This class for the littles was such a hit last year that Mrs. Troy and Ms. Troy are offering it again.

Extra Curricular Make Ups + Last Minute Class Addition

We should be all caught up on make up days for Session 3 extra curriculars now unless you have a TUESDAY class.  Those classes will meet for the last time on Tuesday, March 6.

Check out the Golf Squad class being offered to K-4 kiddos.   I can’t imagine being snow free enough for golf, mid-March but hope springs eternal.  So, get your golfer signed up now. https://golfsquad.com/school/davinci-academy/

NICE TO KNOW

Snow Days – What Did They Do To Our Calendar?

The Board discussed the possibility of making up classes that were missed this winter because of cold or snow.  They have decided that we will not be adding any school days to the calendar at this time.   If, by some fluke of nature, we are forced to close school again for weather related reasons before the end of this school year, the Board will revisit this decision.

Read-a-thon Results

Thank you for the 383 readers that participated in the read-a-thon.  The readers logged 90,558 minutes read (that’s 1,509 hours and 18 minutes!) and raised $7,803.43.  The funds raised through the read-a-thon will be used for the PTO to purchase item the teachers request and family events hosted by the PTO (movie nights and the spring carnival).  We will also be donating 15% of the proceeds to the school’s library.

Ever Wonder if your Silent Dismissal Number was Entered into the System at the End of the Day?

The teachers who assist your children at the end of the day in car line would greatly appreciate if everyone who picked children up would use the Silent Dismissal app.   We often have trouble with phones freezing as teachers are entering numbers on cold days, and parents can easily dismiss their children from the warmth of the car using the app.  If you are able, please contact the office to get set up with the Silent Dismissal app.  Thank you!
